Plastic Free July Is Just the Start: 5 Dog Swaps We Use All Year

Plastic Free July is a great opportunity to reflect on our habits, but real change comes from the things we do every day — not just once a year. As a dog owner, I used to feel overwhelmed by the amount of plastic waste that came with daily care. Treat packets, poo bags, grooming bottles, and more.

Over time, I made some small but impactful swaps that we now use all year round. These aren’t perfect solutions, but they’re practical, accessible, and better for the planet. Here are five of the eco-friendly dog swaps we’ve made that you can try too:

1. Bulk Treats Instead of Plastic Packets

Instead of buying treats in individually packaged plastic bags, we’ve switched to buying in bulk from Laila and Me. Not only does this reduce packaging, but all of their treats are locally sourced and produced!

💡 Use code JAYCE for a discount at Laila and Me.

2. Compostable Poo Bags

We all know picking up after our dogs is part of the job, but traditional plastic poo bags can take hundreds of years to break down. We now use biodegradable poo bags from Dog by Dr Lisa. They're plant-based, certified compostable and biodegradable, making them a much better option for the environment.

3. Refillable Grooming Supplies

Single-use grooming bottles used to pile up quickly in our bathroom. We’ve since switched to refillable grooming products from Dog by Dr Lisa. The formulas are gentle and effective, and the refill system cuts down significantly on waste.

4. Dog-Safe, Plastic-Free Cleaning

rom muddy paws to food spills, cleaning up after your dog is non-stop. We’ve swapped traditional cleaning sprays for eco-friendly, non-toxic products from Koh. They're refillable, effective, and safe to use around pets.

5. Silicone Treat Pouch Instead of Plastic Baggies

We used to go through a lot of single-use ziplock bags for training treats. Now, we carry a food-grade silicone treat pouch from Voilà Pets. It’s washable, durable, and makes training on the go way more convenient.

💡 Use code JAYCE10 for 10% off.

Sustainability Doesn’t End in July

Plastic Free July might be the catalyst, but it’s the habits we keep year-round that matter most. These swaps aren’t perfect, but they’ve helped us reduce our plastic use without adding stress or complexity to our routine.
